The 2025 Seoul International Music Competition has crowned its winners, and what a thrilling journey it has been! The world of classical music is buzzing with excitement and a touch of controversy.
In the final round, held on December 10th, 2025, at the Seoul Arts Center Concert Hall, six exceptional violinists took center stage. Each performer brought their unique talent and interpretation to a prescribed concerto, accompanied by an orchestra, leaving the audience and judges in awe.
And the winner is... Korean violinist Hyunjae Lim! With her mesmerizing performance of the Sibelius Violin Concerto, Lim not only captured the first prize of a whopping USD 50,000 but also the hearts of many. But here's where it gets interesting: Lim wasn't alone in her triumph. Moldovan violinist Lilia Pocitari and US violinist Yeson Sophie Lee took home the second and third prizes, respectively, with USD 30,000 and USD 20,000 in their pockets.
The competition's fourth and fifth prizes went to Ukrainian violinist Oleksii Tyshchenko and US violinist Jason Moon, respectively, while Korean violinist Haewon Yoon secured the sixth prize. Each of these talented musicians received USD 10,000, USD 7,000, and USD 5,000, respectively, as recognition of their outstanding performances.
Hyunjae Lim, born in 1997, has already established herself as a force to be reckoned with in the classical music world. Her impressive resume includes numerous competition wins, such as the fifth prize and Bach prize at the 2015 Singapore International Violin Competition, first prize at the 2017 Albert M. Greenfield Competition, and third prize at the prestigious 2018 Menuhin Competition. She even reached the semi-finals of the 2025 Sibelius Competition in Helsinki.
Currently, Lim is honing her skills at the renowned Curtis Institute of Music, where she studies under the guidance of esteemed teachers like Midori, Shmuel Ashkenasi, and Arnold Steinhardt. Her talent has already graced the stages of prestigious orchestras, including the Philadelphia Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and Houston Symphony.
The jury, chaired by Mi-kyung Lee, consisted of an impressive panel of experts, including Ju-Young Baek, Martin Beaver, Ronald Copes, Wei He, Masafumi Hori, Dong Suk Kang, Dene Olding, Marco Rizzi, and Ulf Wallin. Their collective expertise ensured a fair and rigorous evaluation process.
The Seoul International Music Competition is an annual event, rotating between disciplines of violin, piano, and voice. The previous violin edition, held in 2022, was won by another Korean violinist, Dong Min Lim. This year's competition has once again showcased the incredible talent and diversity of the classical music scene.
