After months of deadlock and the looming threat of a teacher strike, the Anchorage School District and the Anchorage Education Association have finally reached a tentative contract agreement. On Saturday, both parties announced a three-year contract agreement that tackles two major sticking points: educator salaries and health care contributions. In a joint statement, they revealed that the deal includes a meaningful salary increase for all 2,800 educators represented by the union, as well as a significant boost to the district’s health insurance contributions—a critical issue given the soaring cost of health care. And this is the part most people miss: the agreement also includes a retroactive 3% salary increase for the current school year, on top of a 5% increase in Year 1, 5% in Year 2, and 4% in Year 3. Additionally, the district will increase its health care contribution by $100 each year of the contract.
Christi Sitz, President of the Anchorage Education Association, hailed the agreement as “historic,” emphasizing that competitive wages and benefits are essential for retaining and attracting skilled teachers. Superintendent Jharrett Bryantt acknowledged the challenges of negotiating during a period of financial strain, calling the agreement a testament to months of collaboration and shared commitment to supporting educators.
But here’s the catch: This announcement comes at a time when the district faces an $83 million budget deficit, with no savings to fall back on and little hope for increased state funding. In December, the district imposed a hiring freeze to ease budget pressures, leaving stakeholders to ponder difficult options like increasing class sizes—a move that could further strain educators and students alike.
The teachers union has long argued that educators deserve higher pay to reflect their growing workload, skyrocketing health care costs, and the rising cost of living. They’ve also stressed that better wages and employer health care contributions are key to retaining experienced teachers, especially after a wave of departures and retirements in recent years. The tentative deal now heads to the union’s membership for a ratification vote in late January. If approved, it will then go to the Anchorage School Board for final consideration in early February. Notably, the agreement was reached outside of arbitration, as both sides continued negotiations even as arbitration loomed.
Under the terms, the expired contract from June 30, 2025, will be extended through the rest of this year, meaning the new contract—if ratified—will take effect for a full three years starting July 1, 2026. Sitz and Bryantt thanked their respective bargaining teams, stressing their shared goal of ensuring students have access to the best educators and resources.
