Associate Professor Nic Rawlence and his team named this new species Meterchen luti, a nod to the nursery rhyme 'Old Mother Goose.' The fossil, estimated to be around 16 to 19 million years old, has sparked a reevaluation of previous assumptions about the lineage of New Zealand's birds.
Unraveling the Goose's Story
The study, published in Historical Biology, analyzed 11 bones initially thought to belong to geese. Surprisingly, the bones belonged to three distinct species: Miotadorna sanctibathansi, a tadornine duck; Notochen bannockburnensis, a large anatid; and the newly discovered Meterchen luti. None of these fossils supported the earlier theory that cereopsine geese had a long history in Zealandia during the Miocene.
A Shift in Perspective
Lead author Alan Tennyson highlights the significance of this discovery, explaining how it contradicts an earlier theory suggesting a 14-million-year history of cereopsine geese in Zealandia. Instead, the findings align with genetic evidence indicating a much later arrival, approximately seven million years ago, from Australia. This reinterpretation paints a dynamic picture of New Zealand's bird evolution, with many well-known species appearing relatively recently.
