After the meeting, Maher made some observations on his show, noting that Trump seemed surprisingly "gracious and measured" in person. He even went as far as to say, "A crazy person doesn't live in the White House. A person who plays a crazy person on TV a lot lives there."
But here's where it gets controversial... This seemingly mild observation sparked quite a reaction, particularly from Maher's more liberal viewers. They felt he was humanizing the president in a way that was problematic. The backlash was so significant that it even inspired a satirical essay by Larry David, star of "Curb Your Enthusiasm." David humorously parodied Maher's monologue by imagining a dinner with Adolf Hitler and coming away impressed – a stark, darkly comedic parallel to highlight the perceived issue.
Maher, however, has consistently defended his decision to meet with Trump, dismissing the criticism as "childish" and "purely emotional," deeming it "so unhelpful and dumb." He believes this kind of reaction is unproductive.
And this is the part most people miss... The whole kerfuffle resurfaced when Trump himself took to Truth Social on February 14th, posting a scathing review of their dinner. He called Maher a "jerk" and declared the meeting a "waste of time." Maher believes Trump's anger stemmed from the fact that he continued to criticize the president after their dinner, even though the meeting itself was cordial. Maher humorously compared it to a dating scenario: "A guy buys you dinner and then expects you to put out. I'm not that guy."
Trump's post also claimed Maher was "extremely nervous" during their meeting and "had ZERO confidence in himself," even requesting a vodka tonic to calm his nerves. Maher, in response, clarified he asked for a margarita, and not immediately, and firmly denied being nervous, stating, "I had a drink before dinner, as people do."
