Sebastian Ofner's premature celebration costs him the Australian Open spot in an epic collapse.
The Austrian tennis player's blunder against Nishesh Basavareddy in the Australian Open qualifiers on Wednesday was a stunning turn of events. With a commanding 6-1 lead in the deciding set tiebreak, Ofner seemed destined for the next round. But after winning another point to move 7-1 ahead, he began celebrating and walked towards the net, forgetting the rule that final-set tiebreaks require 10 points to win, not seven.
Basavareddy, the 20-year-old American, saw an opportunity and reeled off eight of the next nine points, snatching a stunning 4-6 6-4 7-6(13-11) victory from the jaws of defeat. The win was particularly sweet for Basavareddy, who earned his stripes as a wildcard last year by taking the opening set off 10-times champion Novak Djokovic in the first round.
'I knew there was still some time... In a super (match) tiebreak, you always have a chance, so I kept believing,' Basavareddy said. 'After I won that next point... generally when that happens, you start over-thinking like, 'Oh, I thought I already won the match, through to the next round'. So yeah, that definitely gave me a little bit of hope.'
The dramatic turnaround left Ofner deflated, shaking hands and contemplating what might have been. Basavareddy's remarkable comeback was marked by a 'choking' celebration, holding his hands at his neck before pumping his fist. The victory highlighted the fine line between triumph and tragedy in tennis, where a single moment of overconfidence can cost a player their spot in a grand slam tournament.
