The Detroit Tigers' outfield farm system is a tale of two extremes, but one player is quietly emerging as a potential gem! While Max Clark shines as a top-tier prospect on the cusp of the majors and Cris Rodriguez is an exciting, albeit unproven, international talent, the depth of the Tigers' outfielders presents a more nuanced picture. These are players with raw tools, capable of surprising breakouts, but currently projecting more as valuable platoon or bench pieces. Among this group, Jackson Strong might just be the one to watch.
But here's where it gets interesting... Strong, a left-handed hitting outfielder, was a seventh-round draft pick in 2024 from Canisius College. He signed for a modest bonus, a projectable 20-year-old with a promising skill set and ample time to develop. A year and a half later, that selection is proving to be a shrewd investment for the Tigers.
In 2025, Strong made his full-season professional debut and truly impressed. He dominated Single-A pitching and continued his strong performance after a mid-season promotion to High-A West Michigan. His plate discipline was evident, evidenced by nine home runs and 20 stolen bases. His plus speed and developing defensive skills in center field, coupled with a sufficient arm, suggest he could also be a capable right fielder if that becomes his optimal role.
And this is the part most people miss... Strong's walk rate was impressive, sitting at 12.3% in Single-A and even improving to 13.8% in High-A. However, his combined strikeout rate of 28.9% is the primary hurdle preventing him from soaring higher in prospect rankings. This is the area where he needs significant improvement to fully unlock his developing power and elite speed.
On a more positive note, his swinging strike rate of 12.4% is quite respectable. The high strikeout numbers seem to stem more from an overly passive approach, leading to too many called strikes (19.3% called strike rate). If he can become more assertive in the strike zone, there's a strong possibility he can significantly reduce his strikeout rate.
Because he was only 20 on draft day, Strong is younger than many of his draft-class peers. He'll enter his second full pro season at 22, a good age for continued development. Standing at 5'11" and 185 pounds, he's an athletic player with room to grow into average power. Currently graded at a 45 for raw power, there's a good chance he can reach a 50. His swing mechanics and approach are already geared towards hitting the ball in the air to right field, meaning any power gains should translate quickly to game performance.
The potential ceiling here is exciting: an above-average center fielder who gets on base consistently, hits 15-20 home runs annually, and racks up stolen bases. This would be an incredible return on the Tigers' draft investment, even if it requires substantial offensive development.
But what if he doesn't quite reach that peak? A more probable outcome is that Strong develops into a valuable depth piece, capable of playing all three outfield positions effectively. He might, however, remain a bit too susceptible to high-velocity fastballs and elite breaking pitches to be a consistent everyday major leaguer. This season, as he anchors center field for the Whitecaps, he'll face better pitching and will need to demonstrate a more aggressive yet disciplined approach at the plate. His progression into the upper minors will undoubtedly be a storyline to follow closely.
