The NBA-to-NCAA Shift: A Controversial Trend?
In a move that has sparked debate and intrigue, James Nnaji, the 31st pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, has decided to join the Baylor Bears, adding to the growing list of former professional basketball players entering the NCAA ranks.
Nnaji, a 21-year-old with a promising future, has been granted four years of eligibility by the NCAA, and Baylor is hoping he'll be ready to make an impact in their Big 12 opener against TCU on January 3rd.
But here's where it gets interesting: Nnaji's journey to Baylor is a unique one. Drafted by the Detroit Pistons and subsequently traded to the Charlotte Hornets, his rights were later acquired by the New York Knicks. Despite these transactions, Nnaji never stepped foot on an NBA or G League court, leaving him eligible to play college basketball.
Since his draft, Nnaji has been plying his trade overseas, including a stint with Girona in Spain during the 2024-25 season. Most recently, he was with Merkezefendi, but their paths parted in July. Nnaji also showcased his skills in the NBA Summer League, averaging 3.2 points and 3.6 rebounds per game across five appearances for the Knicks in 2025. He even had a brief run with the Hornets' summer league squad, appearing in six games.
Nnaji's decision to join Baylor continues a trend that has become increasingly controversial. Guard Thierry Darlan committed to Santa Clara in September, becoming the first pro athlete to regain NCAA eligibility after spending two years in the G League. London Johnson, another guard, followed suit, committing to Louisville in October and joining the Cardinals this month. Johnson has been a professional since 2022, with stints in the G League and with the Maine Celtics and Cleveland Charge.
And this is the part most people miss: the backlash. Michigan State coach Tom Izzo expressed his outrage at this new development, questioning the NCAA's decision-making process. He stated, "I do not know anything about it. I cannot believe this was sprung on us. The NCAA has got to regroup. This just goes to show you how ridiculous people in power can be when making decisions without consulting those affected."
Baylor, currently decimated by injuries, is hoping Nnaji can provide a much-needed boost. The Bears have been without forward Maikcol Perez and center Juslin Bodo Bodo for the entire season, so Nnaji's arrival could be a game-changer.
