Rob Pelinka, who serves as the Lakers' president of basketball operations and general manager, elaborated on this innovative relationship shortly before the team faced off against the Golden State Warriors. This marks his first public discussion since the recent confirmation of Dodgers owner Mark Walter's acquisition of the Lakers, valued at an astounding $10 billion, which became official in late October.
Pelinka expressed his enthusiasm about having external allies and advocates like the Dodgers to draw inspiration from, highlighting the significant accomplishments the Dodgers have achieved under Walter’s ownership. He noted, "It has been fantastic to have the opportunity to learn from the Dodgers' successes and to consult with someone as knowledgeable as Andrew Friedman regarding best practices."
Friedman, the savvy president of baseball operations for the Dodgers, has been with the team since 2014, following Walter's purchase of the franchise from Frank McCourt in 2012. Pelinka praised Friedman’s intellect and his exceptional ability to lead the Dodgers to championship victories. Pelinka explained, "When Mark acquired the team, Jeanie and I dove deeply into discussing the areas he wishes to develop and become more assertive in. Observing how the Dodgers constructed their organization has served as an illuminating example and guiding light for us. We're still actively exploring how we will reshape our team this offseason, and we anticipate positive changes ahead."
While Pelinka hinted that one key area of improvement will be emulating the Dodgers' approach to their draft process and farm system, he clarified the power dynamics within the Lakers’ organization as they implement these changes. "The direction will be led by myself and Jeanie, with Mark's valuable support," he stated confidently.
Interestingly, the Lakers’ front office is leaner than many of their NBA counterparts. Following Magic Johnson’s unexpected resignation in 2019, Pelinka has emerged as the primary decision-maker for the franchise, with Kurt Rambis acting in a senior advisory capacity. Regarding other potential trades leading up to the deadline, he asserted, "We approached negotiations aggressively. Sometimes being aggressive means turning down offers that might not align with our long-term vision, even if they involve a desirable player who could offer immediate relief. It requires courage to say no, especially to alluring short-term solutions that may disrupt our overall strategy."
Reflecting on the Lakers’ positioning for the summer, Pelinka noted, "The new dual-apron system presents challenges that all teams are currently navigating. Many have tested the waters over the second apron, encountering difficulties along the way. We recognize that having flexibility now is advantageous for us as we head into the offseason. Some teams may have overextended their reach, leading to player availability that could benefit us."
He added, "Our options are broad, whether through free agency, retaining our own players, or seeking out talented individuals from around the league whose teams are looking to reduce salary. We’re optimistic about the various avenues we can explore to enhance our roster this summer."
