NHL Pleased with Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics Ice Hockey Test Event (2026)

Winter Olympics Ice Hockey: NHL's Perspective on Milan-Cortina Games Test Event

The NHL has expressed its satisfaction with a test event held at the Santagiulia Arena in Milan, despite ongoing concerns about the venue's readiness for the upcoming Winter Olympics. Delays in construction and doubts about the ice quality have raised questions about the participation of NHL players in the Games for the first time since 2014.

Following the test event, the NHL and NHL Players' Association issued a statement, emphasizing their commitment to monitoring the situation and ensuring the tournament's success. They acknowledged the challenges posed by the unfinished venue and the new ice surface, but remained optimistic about the potential for a successful event.

The statement read, "We expect that the necessary work to address all remaining issues will continue around the clock. The NHL and NHLPA will continue to monitor the situation, standing ready to consult and advise on the work being done to ensure that the local organizing committee, the IOC, and the IIHF deliver a tournament and playing conditions befitting the world's best players."

The Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, scheduled for February 6-22, will feature ice hockey matches at both the new Santagiulia Arena and the existing Milano Rho Arena. The rink in Milan, approved by the IIHF, is shorter than the NHL's minimum requirement, leading to concerns about increased high-speed collisions. During the test event, a minor delay occurred due to a small hole in the ice, which was promptly repaired.

IIHF President Luc Tardif expressed confidence in the venue's capabilities, stating, "The puck was sliding and not bumping."

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman acknowledged the ongoing challenges, noting the construction and ice-making processes. He assured that the NHL is committed to providing support and expertise, despite not being the primary organizers. Bettman emphasized, "We've been assured that everything that needs to be done on a timely basis will get done. But, as you know, it's not our event. We're invited guests."

The test event provided valuable insights into the current status of the venue, offering a glimpse into the potential challenges and opportunities for the upcoming Winter Olympics ice hockey tournament.
